LECTURES
Week 1 (3/4/23)- Briefing and exercise + e-portfolio setup

Week 2 (10/4/23)- Composition + Collage work
Firstly, Sir Fauzi has taught us a few good points on how to make a good composition, by using focal point, scale and hierarchy, balancing elements, white space which are categorised in rules of thirds, golden ratio and framing/cropping composition. After presenting the slides, We spent the rest of the session to do our own composition for our collage design (project 1).
Intro to Basic Composition
  • Focal Point
> A strong focal point helps viewers eyes to look at the important part of the design.

  • Scale & Hierarchy
    > Often used to help communicate hierarchy by drawing attention towards and away from certain elements, signifying their importance to the communication.

  • Balance the Elements

  • White Space
    > Known as "empty space", is to balance up the main focus of a composition.

Rules of Thirds
> The process of dividing an image into thirds, using two horizontal and two vertical lines.
> When positioning the main focus of your image in one of these intersection points(red dots), the image will look more natural.
> It is a way to:
  • Use composition techniques that are in line with what's naturally pleasing to the eye.
  • Creatively using the negative spaces.
  • Create conversation between the subject and background.

Golden Ratio
> When used in design, it fosters organic and natural-looking compositions that are pleasing to the eye.
> It provides a sense of artistry
> A useful guideline for determining dimensions of the layout.

Composition (Framing & Cropping)

Week 3: (17/4/23)-
How to make digital collage
Intro to Photoshop
Lasso tool, pen tool, layering

Lasso tool
> Allows to draw and pinpoint specific areas of a document.
  • Lasso
  • Polygonal Lasso
  • Magnetic Lasso

Pen tool
> A tool to create paths from scratch.
> Bezier game: A website where you can practice using the pen tool
  • Straight line paths
  • U shapes curves
  • Simple S curves
  • Complex S curves

Lasso Tool vs Pen Tool
> The pen tool can be used to create precise paths and shapes from the anchor points that were placed. However, the Lasso tool was made for a "selection tool" instead of the pen tool.

Layering
> Different images stacked on top of each other to form a whole new image with more volume.

Fig Example of layering image in Photoshop

Week 4: (24/4/23)- No classes due to public holiday [Hari Raya]
Introduction to Photoshop 3 - Adjustment Layer & Filters

Adjustment Layer
> A group of non-destructive image editing tools that adds color and tonal adjustments to your image without permanently changing its pixels.
> When adding an adjustment layer to your image, a new layer will appear over your image and there you can modify your image based on the tools given.
  • Brightness/Contrast
    > Brightness: Adjust the highlights in your image.
Contrast: Adjust the shadows of the image.
  • Level
    > Modify the tonal values in an image by adjusting the levels of the shadows, midtones, and highlights.
  • Curves
    > Most precise tool for editing the tones in an image.
    > Can be adjusted into as many points throughout the entire tonal range of your image.
  • Exposure
    > Adjust exposure levels with 3 sliders -> Exposure, Offset, Gamma.
    > Exposure: Only adjusts the highlights of the image
      Offset: Adjusts the midtones
      Gamma: Adjusts the dark tones
  • Selective Color
    > Selectively modifies the amount of a primary color without modifying the other primary colors in your image.
Filters
> Using filters to change color, add blur or create completely new image effects.

Week 5: (1/5/23)- No classes due to public holiday [Labour Day]
Digital Photography
> Main parts of a camera
  • Camera body
-> Shutter, Image sensor, LCD Screen, Camera lens
  • Camera lens
    -> Aperture/Iris

Exposure Setting
  1. Iris
  2. Shutter Speed
  3. ISO

Iris/Aperture
-> Controls the flow of light entering the lens
-> Measured by f-stop, indicated by the sequence of f-number (f/1, f/1.4, f/2..). The lower the f-number, the larger the lens opening.

Shutter
-> A small plastic sheet that opens and closes to allow light onto the film/ prevent light from reaching the film.
Shutter Speed
-> Measured in seconds (1/1000 s, 1/500 s, 1/125 s..)

ISO
-> Refers to the sensitivity--the signal gain, of a camera's sensor.
-> Common ISO cam settings: 100,200,400,640,800..
-> The lower the number of ISO, the less sensitive the camera to light, the finer the grain.

EXERCISE 1
Graphic design works that I have chosen:

Design #1:

Description:
> First off, the bubbly typography of the title and the illustration caught my attention which gives a fun and expressive design. I'm also into this retro/vintage kind of design, it's pretty simple yet aesthetic and informative.

Design #2:
Description:
> The gradient colors are very vibrant but not too striking and it’s still pleasing to the eye. I really like how the typography fits into the middle of the pink heart with some outlines outside the heart border using a different color to differentiate the words along with other heart illustrations on the top and bottom to align with the middle heart for it to stand out.

Design #3:

Description
> This poster design is pleasing to the eye when I first see it. It feels like a pleasant night sky view with these little stars/sparkles around. The illustrations are also pretty eye-catching, especially these fishes and flowers that blend well with the black background.

Project 1A
Making three pre-compositions for the collage design:
[Physical collage]

> For the 2nd week of class, we brought relevant materials to be used for our collage design compositions. Here are the three collage compositions I have made while in class and through the guidance of Sir Fauzi.

Pre-composition #1

Pre-composition #2

Pre-composition #3

> Composition #1 was chosen to be my final physical collage design. I like how the coloured yarns were circling around the main object and to the specific lyrics on the right side to an image of food picture below the main object so it kind of creates a moving perspective for the viewers to look at it from the main object to the bottom.

Week 3 (17/4/23)

Project 1A (2)
Making three pre-compositions for the collage design assignment:
[Digital Collage]

> Sir has been given us a google drive folder with images for us to use as our digital collage in Photoshop. I started to play around and practice on some functions to get used to it.

Here are the three pre-compositions for my digital collage done in Adobe Photoshop.

Composition #2

Composition #3

> For my final digital collage composition, I have chose composition #1.

Project 1B
Digital Imaging Exercise

Part 1 - Hearst Mansion
> In this part of the exercise, there are two versions of the hearst mansion; the Shazam version and our own full body picture version. We first started off with the Shazam version by watching a video tutorial given by sir on how to do it.

The point of this exercise is to try and blend in a person/ character into the image given to make it looks somewhat realistic in the eye by using the software tools like filters, masking, adjustments and so on.

Fig Shazam ver hearst mansion

> Next, for our own version of the hearst mansion exercise, we are required to take a full body length picture of ourselves with good lighting to paste ourselves into the mansion background.

Fig Using the quick selection tool to remove the background

Fig Adjusting the brightness/contrast to blend in with the background

> I have also added shadows behind my image by using the brush tool and gaussian blur effect to blur the black lines out.

Part 2 - Recoloring B&W exercise
The Process

> From a greyscale picture I am able to recolor it by using the brush tool and choose the color that fits the part that I'm going to color it (eg: skin color) and then used the overlay blend mode to make the skin color more blended.

Reflections

> In this project 1, before we move forward in learning on Photoshop tools, we first get to make our own physical collage designs to understand the importance of composition better. Sir Fauzi taught us to just be minimal but the focal point should be obvious enough for the viewers' attention. After that, we also get to do digital collages and proceed deeper into gaining more knowledge in Photoshop by having some photo manipulation exercises. Overall, the exercises given in this project helps me unleash my creativity better and I enjoyed experimenting with the tools.
