 LECTURES

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is a collection of global goals designed to be a "blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all". The goals were set in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly and are intended to be achieved by 2030.

The 12 chosen SDG goals theme for this project are:
  • No poverty
  • Zero Hunger
  • Good health and Well-being
  • Quality Education
  • Clean Water and Sanitation
  • Affordable and clean energy
  • Decent work and economic growth
  • Sustainable Cities and Communities
  • Responsible consumption and production
  • Climate action
  • life below water
  • life on land

2.0 Poster Design Research

> Before starting on this poster design research, I have to choose one SDG Goals theme to be able to start my research and so I was debating between the theme of  "Climate Action" and "Zero Hunger". In the end, I have chosen "Climate Action" for my poster design theme.

Topic Research
  • Climate action refers to the actions taken by the community to reduce climate change and also to spread awareness on the effects of climate change.
  • It involves taking steps to reduce greenhouse gas for example.
Here are some poster design pictures for referencing/getting inspiration: (taken from Google Slides progression check)

2.1 Ideation Sketch
Fig 1.2 ideation sketch poster design

> To focus more on the effects of climate change, I first sketched out the earth as the main subject then showing both sides in different kinds of the effects in climate change.

The left side of the earth represents drought and the greenhouse gases that produce CO2 from the factories while the right side is more pointed towards how the earth is ‘melting’ due to global warming and other factors that cause climate change. I’ve also added a curve around the surface of the Earth to resemble the greenhouse effect on the ozone layer.

For my tagline, I wrote a simple “CHANGE” in the middle of the earth and then a leading text on the bottom right to give a strong impact towards people to start and change for a better future.

2.2 Digitizing process

Fig 1.3 Digitized process of the poster design

Description of process:
 Background
> I chose a more gradient darker tone of background simply because it is a poster designed to spread awareness of the deterioration of the environment. However, in the end result of the design, I've changed the background into a lighter sky blue with a radial gradient as my background since it was more pleasing to look at.

 Main shape and structure
> The shape that I've done for this poster design is a big circular shape made from the eclipse tool to resemble the planet Earth. And same as the ideation sketch, the Earth has been divided in two different parts with the help of the pen tool which emphasizes on the effects on climate change. The left side resembles drought meanwhile the right side resembles global warming so I utilized the pen tool, knife tool and pencil tool for these.

Since it's a MyTiger Competition, I thought that I would need to add some tiger features on my poster design so I added ears and colored the planet Earth into a tiger color palette.

 Taglines/slogans
Later on, I have added my head tagline which is a simple word "CHANGE" and place it in the middle of the Earth and a lead-in text that writes "IF NOT NOW, WHEN?"

Unfortunately, I did not have any more screenshots of my digitized progress in AI so I tried to give an input on my poster design as shown above.

Final outcome

Fig 1.4 Final outcome of MyTiger Competition Poster Design

Description:

The SDG Goal that I have implied in this poster design is under the theme of "Climate Action". The base definition of climate action is taking action and starting to do something that helps with climate change or global warming in this era that we live in right now.

To focus more on the effects of climate change, I first made a circle shape that represents the Earth and separated the shape into half. On the left side, I'm trying to illustrate one of the effects of climate change which is drought so I cut the shape into a few pieces to show that it is drought. I have also added some "gases" at the bottom and by this, I wanted to show that the greenhouse effect that has been produced by the factories can also be one of the factors of climate change as well. As for the right side of the earth, I wanted to point more towards the global warming effect due to climate change so the green parts or as known as the lands are "melting" to symbolize it.

For my tagline of this poster design, I just wrote a simple "CHANGE" in the middle of the earth. In my opinion, I think that it is quite self-explanatory that we need to do something to change for a better environment and I have already illustrated some of the effects through my work and so I think this simple tagline it can still be impactful for others to be aware of the situation that we are in now. The leading text at the bottom part is also to spread awareness towards people so that people can start changing for a better future.

Reflections

> In this project, I do not have much confidence yet in making poster designs hence I think that I did not execute my design with the following theme well. However, it was an experimental process as I get to explore different tools in Adobe Illustrator and also apply some techniques that I have learned throughout the lectures so I'm still in my learning process on AI software. I hope that as more tasks/exercises are given in the future, I get to improve more and get used in this software.
