 INSTRUCTIONS

Fig 1.0 Module Information booklet

Final Project: Animated page visual novel (1 page)

Task Requirements:

  • Continue the same story and design aesthetics from the previous project (Digital Triptych)
  • Work only from one paragraph of the story of the first page.
  • Create a one-page of comic/animated panel, not animating one panel of the digital triptych.
  • Page setup: 21 x 30cm.
> I then went online to find some reference images on the comic panel and their layouts.

Fig 2.2 One of the Act Structures in Digital Triptych

> I have chosen the second act/climax of my digital triptych from my last project to proceed with the animation.

This scene shows how Detective C. Augustine Dupin tries to solve this mystery crime through his observation and analytic skills.

Fig 2.2 First layout sketch attempt

My initial ideas to be made in this animated panel:
- A night street view of an alley walk
- Speech bubbles of the voices made by the Orang-Utan when killing the victims and animation of blood dripping down
- One side of the detective's eye and the other side would be the culprit's eye
- Some scenes of how the victims died

Fig 2.3 Finalized layout sketch

> However, due to the short amount of time for myself to finish this project, I have simplified/removed some of the scenes during the digitizing/animating process.

> I have followed briefly on an animation tutorial that I have found on Youtube. It was helpful but challenging for me during the animating process.

Reflections
> It was a fun but time-consuming project as I spent a lot of time just watching the tutorials and learning the basics of animation in After Effects. There's certain times where the software has crashed and therefore I have to restart the progression but overall I am quite satisfied with my final animated panel. I would wish that I am able to animate more stuffs if there were still ample time for me.
