Intro to Film Sound

Sound elements
: The mixing of sound elements below creates an audio setting that supports the action and engages with the spectators.
  1. Speech
  2. Sound effects
  3. Music
Speech
: One of the most important tools for understanding the story of the film.
Dialogue: Conversation between characters in a movie.
Voice Over: The voice of an unseen narrator speaking.

Sound effects
Ambience
: Audio refers to the background noise present at a given scene/location.

Hard or "cut" effects
Eg: Train sliding door open and close, footsteps, train moving on tracks, ambience in train etc.

Music
: Music in movie is to enhance the dramatic narrative and the emotional impact.

Dubbing
: Or Automated Dialog Replacement (ADR), is the process of re-recording dialogue after the filming process to improve audio quality/ reflect audio changes.

Foley
: A sound effects technique for synchronous effects/live effects.
The Foley technique is named after Jack Foley, a sound editor at Universal Studios.


Project 1
Exercise 1: Audio Dubbing

  • Watch the video on Premiere Pro 
  • List down each scenes + sound effects in spreadsheets
  • Self-record scene dialogues + finding sound effects online 
  • Audio track: 4 tracks for dialogue, one character one track.
    3 tracks for sound effects ; 3 tracks for ambience sound.

Dialogue: -6, -12
Semi-tone adjusted to lower pitch
Workspace> audio> effect controls> adjust the volume of the sounds

Process 
Munich Movie

> We were given a short clip of this movie scene for us to start with our audio dubbing project.

> After making the spreadsheets, it was easier to split the clips according to the scenes/sound effects/dialogues.

> Uploaded audio dubbings that were recorded on the phone to the Google Drive folder so that it can be imported to Premiere Pro as well.
