Design Principles
Topic 1
Contrast
- Contrast holds an important role in the visuals. If there's no contrast, the visual experience would be monotonous.
- Contrast provides visual interest.
- Contrast exists in movie characters, interior designs, or even web designs and more.

Visual examples:

Gestalt Theory
: Gestalt refers to "shape" or "form" in German.
: Gestalt principles describe how the human eye perceives visual elements.

Principles of Similarity
Examples: patterns/shapes/forms based on similarity

Principles of Continuation
Principles of Closure
Principle of Proximity
Principle of figure/ground

Law of Symmetry & Order
- similar to Law/Principles of similarity

Other Laws from Gestalt Theory
- Law of Uniform Connectedness
- Law of Praganz
- Law of Common Fate

Topic 2
Balance
: Occurs when both sides of a composition have equal visual weight.
: Can be symmetrical or asymmetrical.

Symmetrical balance
- The equal arrangement of the elements on either side of the central axis (horizontal or vertical), resulting in a bilateral balance.
- Arranging elements around the central point results in radial balance.
Example: human face.

Asymmetrical balance
: Unequal visual weight on each side of the composition.
: One side of the composition may have an important focal point at the side and lesser focal points on the other side.
: It gives more dynamic which evokes a sense of movement, energy and vitality.

The golden ratio
: Also known as phi, it is a mathematical concept and a number that goes on indefinitely.
: The Golden Ratio is perceived as the representative of perfect beauty and also as a guide to create perfect visual balance in architecture.

Rules of Thirds
: It is a composition guideline to create more dynamism to a work of design/artwork/illustration.

Emphasis (and dominance)
: Used to create dominance and focus in a design work.

Topic 3
Repetition
: Reusing elements - colors, patterns, fonts etc throughout a piece of work.
: Repetition of elements of design creates rhythm and pattern within the work.

Movement
: Motion or movement in an image occurs when objects seem to be moving in a visual image.
: Comes from the kinds of shapes, forms, lines and curves that are used.

Hierarchy
: Visual hierarchy directs viewers to the most important information first.

Alignment
: Creates a sense of unity and cohesion, which contributes to the design's overall aesthetic and perceives stability.
: Can also mean leading a person through design.

Topic 4
Harmony
: Involves the selection of elements that share a common trait.
: Harmony is the sense what all of the elements of your design fit together.

Unity
: Refers to the repetition of particular elements throughout your design - whether they're colors, shapes or materials to put things together.

Scale & Proportion
: Are both elements that have to do with size.
Scale -> Refers to the size & dimension of figures and forms relative to a specific unit of measure.
- Actual measurement
- Visual estimates on comparison

Proportion -> size of the parts of an object in relationship to other parts of the object.
- it it said to be harmonious when a correct relationship exists between the elements with respect to size and quantity.

Topic 5
Symbol, Word & Image
Symbol
: A sign, shape, or object that is used to represent something else
: It can provide/convey information equivalent to one/more stories of text

Pictorial symbols
-> Image related and simplified pictures.

Abstract symbols
-> Can look like the objects they represents but with lesser details.

Arbitrary symbols
-> Have no resemblance at all to the objects or the ideas they represent.
-> Is invented with the meaning constructed behind. We have to learn arbitrary symbols.

Words & Images

Task 1
Exploration

Task To-Do
  • Pick and briefly describe one goal from the UNSDG.
  • Select an existing art/design work that revolves around the SDG goal of your choice (+ include the credit line of the artwork)
  • In about 100-150 words, explain why you chose the design work with the SDG goal + list down the design principles observed in the design.

Chosen SDG Goal: SDG 12
Responsible consumption & production
Definition: To ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns by reducing wastage and minimizing the usage of natural resources through recycling and reusing materials that we already have.

Examples of design work that revolves around SDG Goal 12
- Sustainable fashion (Detox My Fashion, Patagonia)
- Interactive installations
- Sculptures made out of recycled materials
- reusable packaging (Loop)

Chosen Design work that relates to SDG Goal 12

Title: HERENCIA
Designer's name: Juliana Garcia Bello
Year: 2020
Size:-
Medium: Photograph/Fashion set

Reasoning:
I chose this image of a fashion design set because firstly the garments are from a sustainable fashion set  and sustainable fashion is one of the examples of design work that revolves around this SDG. The idea of reusing old materials and innovating the garments to be made as fashion wear correlates with the SDG that I've chosen which promotes eco-friendliness as well. The design principles that was found are a symmetrical balance of the models from their poses which can be seen in the image. It also gives a sense of repetition on how the garments were styled here. The harmonious of the colors can also be found here too.

Design Principles in this design work:
- Balance
- Harmony
- Repetition
