Chosen Picture:
Fig 1.0 Sustainable fashion design set award
Title: HERENCIA
Designer's name: Juliana Garcia Bello
Year: 2020
Size:-
Medium: Photograph/Fashion set
Reasoning:
I chose this image of a fashion design set because firstly the garments are from a sustainable fashion set and sustainable fashion is one of the examples of design work that revolves around this SDG. The idea of reusing old materials and innovating the garments to be made as fashion wear correlates with the SDG that I've chosen which promotes eco-friendliness as well. The design principles that was found are a symmetrical balance of the models from their poses which can be seen in the image. It also gives a sense of repetition on how the garments were styled here. The harmonious of the colors can also be found here too.
Design Principles in this design work:
- Balance
- Harmony
- Repetition
Task 2
Visual Analysis
Phase 1: Observation
The medium of the design work is a photograph of a fashion set and it is in horizontal format. It can be seen that the blue colors on the garments stand out more at first glance and overall it is a mainly blue monochromatic colored and minimal design. The poses of the models are subtle and portray a balanced photograph. Even though the colors in the fashion sets are similar, each of the garments still has its own unique cutting and add-on materials to show its variety. Out of the four models, one of them has blonde hair while the rest are brunette/black haired. It can also see that the way the garments was stitched together seemed different in each garment sets too.

Phase 2: Analysis
For this fashion design set, the emphasis is more towards the color of the design which is blue as it is consistent throughout the collection and it comes with different shades of blue. The colors stand out more when it's faced with a plain white background in which is why emphasis has taken in place. Repetition of the blue colors is shown in the pieces as well and with its similar fabric materials on the clothing pieces as they were upcycled pieces. Furthermore, there is unity and balance in the overall composition of this fashion showcase photograph as the shades of blue give off a more calm and cool vibe and the designs complement each other well not just because of its color similarities but the overall design collection too. Good proportion was shown in the photograph as the poses of the models has showcased the clothing pieces well.

Phase 3: Interpretation
This fashion design set was designed by Juliana Garcia Bello for the annual sustainable fashion design competition called "Redress Design Award" for the women's collection back in 2020 in Hong Kong. She was inspired heavily by sustainability, her community, and her motivation to upcycle old garments that are no longer used for better use which is making clothing pieces. I find it intriguing firstly on her design of the fashion collection to now her dedication to promoting sustainability in the fashion industry by focusing on the upcycling methods to produce unique pieces that complements sustainability which also correlates to the current SDG that I have chosen as well.

Reflections
In this Design Principles module, it was relatively a smooth process throughout the three tasks. I have learned the different design principles and understood the importance of design principles to be able to produce a nice looking design work with its color balance and so on as a designer student or even a future designer. The tasks acts as a good exercise to train us to identify the design principles shown in the photograph and able to apply it on our design work as well. The feedbacks that were given by the lecturer was pretty helpful too, also always ensuring that we are all in the same page when doing these tasks.
